On June 21, 2024, Hon. Judge Lacandazo-Logan of Family Court Branch 12 in Pasig City welcomed participants from CSWD Mandaluyong, including five children, four social workers, house parents, guardians, a private complainant, and her parents.
The orientation offered a clear and compassionate introduction to the court process, the roles of courtroom personnel, and what participants could expect during an actual hearing. It was more than a briefing—it was a mission to build trust, courage, and understanding in young witnesses.
Creating a Safe Space for Children
Judge Lacandazo-Logan reassured the children that judges are not to be feared. Her warm and approachable demeanor helped ease their worries, creating a comfortable and open environment. She emphasized that the courtroom is not just a place for judgment, but a space where truth and justice can be pursued with dignity.
“Children in Conflict with the Law are still children—capable of change, growth, and redemption. Rather than condemnation, they deserve compassion, guidance, and a genuine opportunity to rehabilitate.”
A Trauma-Informed Approach to Testimony
Court staff introduced anatomically correct dolls, explaining how these tools help children testify in ways that feel safer and less intimidating. This child-sensitive, trauma-informed approach reflects the judiciary’s ongoing commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals throughout the legal process.

Judge Lacandazo-Logan inspired the children with a powerful message about honesty in the courtroom:
“Before you speak, think carefully and be sure that you are telling the truth. If your testimony is not truthful, it will become evident. But when you tell the truth, no matter how questions are asked, your answers will remain the same.”
She reminded them that telling the truth empowers them and helps them stand up for themselves and others.

Acknowledging the emotional toll of testifying, especially in sensitive abuse cases, the judge offered compassionate guidance:
“Remember that you have the right to stand up for the truth and for what is right. Prepare yourself emotionally. Cases involving sexual offenses can be exhausting. But your courage plays a crucial role in seeking justice—not just for yourself, but for others as well.”
